How to color your hair extensions

One of the ways that you can easily color your hair extensions is through dying.

The practice of using a hair dye to add some color to your hair extensions is definitely not unheard of. Some people who use hair extensions in the long term even do it right after buying a new set, just to perfectly match their own hair.

Not to mention, dying hair extensions is also extremely easy, given the right tools and guidance.

Things to remember before coloring hair extensions

Before we begin, here are a few things that you should first remember before coloring your hair extensions.

  1. Test your hair extensions first. This is to check if your hair extensions can indeed withstand what you want to do to it. It’s like doing a ‘patch test’ with your skincare products.
  2. Always use the proper tools. When we say you have to use gloves while dying your hair, we really mean ‘use gloves’. Hair dyes contain very strong chemicals that could damage your skin.
  3. Not all hair extensions can handle hair dye. This is why it’s important to do a ‘patch test’ before soaking your whole set in the dye. You wouldn’t want to ruin your hair extensions beyond repair, would you?

With that out of the way, here’s our easy, step-by-step guide to coloring!

Step-by-step guide in dying your hair extensions

  1. What you need:

    • Hair dye
    • Plastic comb
    • Plastic or latex gloves

    1. First of all, make sure you have all the necessary items within reach so that you don’t have to get up halfway through the process.
    2. For the hair dye, you can easily purchase one at any drugstore or beauty store around you. In doing so, it is essential for you to know how to match extensions with your hair color. A beauty store hair dye is preferred, but even a drugstore brand will do if you’re not too picky about the hair color, or if you’re not trying to match your own hair color. Beauty store hair dyes just tend to have a much better range of natural hair colors which will make it easier to match your hair.
    3. Comb through your hair extensions, making sure that there are no tangles or knots whatsoever. If you’ve previously used your hair extensions, make sure to wash them thoroughly as well, as any styling product left on there can get in the way of your hair dye.
    4. Put on your gloves and prepare the hair dye mixture, making sure to mix the dye and developer well. Most boxes come with everything you need, even the disposable gloves and comb, but you should’ve prepared those materials too in case the box only has the dye and the developer in it.
    5. Time to apply the dye! Use the comb to dye your entire hair extensions, combing through the strands for a better effect. Remember, if you’re not sure if you’ve already dyed the area enough, just dye it again one more time. Make sure you add the dye to all the strands!
    6. After 25-30 minutes (or depending on what your specific hair dye says on the box), rinse out the dye with warm water. You can also use a conditioner at this stage to make your hair softer, as the dye can be quite harsh on your hair. Once you’re done, rinse it out with cold water to lock in the moisture and keep your newly-colored hair soft and silky.

Is it safe to color your hair extensions?

The process of coloring your hair extensions is perfectly safe, but not all hair extensions can handle all hair treatments, especially something as chemically harsh as hair dyes.

You should only worry if you’re using synthetic hair extensions, as the bond in those may not be strong enough to hold on when submitted to harsh treatments. But if you’re using 100% human Remy hair like the ones we have here at ZALA, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Plus, for the best possible best results, you must know how to make extensions match your hair color.
