The Dos & Don'ts of Styling Thin Hair

If you have thin hair, you know the struggles you go through every day. From the lack of fuller hair to the limitations on pulling your hair into different styles, the list goes on and on. But did you know that certain habits might be causing your hair to look less voluminous?

This post discusses the dos and don'ts of styling thin hair. By following these tips, you'll be able to increase the volume of your hair, make it look thicker, and flaunt different styles!

Do’s

Use a Volumizing Shampoo

As the name suggests, volumizing shampoos add volume and fullness to your hair. And since they’re made from light ingredients, you can rest assured the product will not weigh your hair down.

When using a volumizing shampoo, apply it to the scalp and your hair from the root to the ends. Also, ensure the shampoo is free of harsh chemicals like alcohol, sulfates, and parabens, as they can damage your hair.

Wear Bangs

Bangs are a great way to add volume to thin hair. And with proper maintenance, you can retain a beautiful look and fuller hair with an eye-length fringe. Even though not everyone with thin hair can get entirely blunt bangs, the feathery skewed bangs will add an element of style to your look.

Use a Root Lifter Spray

A root lifter raises the hair from the scalp to give your hair an illusion of volume and density. As such, it’s a good idea for women with fine hair to use a root lifter spray. Make sure to use the product before using a blow-dryer. Use it on the top half of your hair and get styling.

Use Dry Shampoo

As someone with fine hair knows, your hair becomes oily the day(s) after shampooing and washing it every day isn’t recommended. So, what can you do about your thin hair that becomes limp soon after washing it?

Consider using a dry shampoo! It adds volume and structure to your hair without weighing it down. Plus, dry shampoo prevents excess scalp oil from flattening your hair. After applying dry shampoo to your hair, consider using a ceramic round brush for more volume and density.

Don’ts

Apply Conditioner to the Roots

When applied to the roots, the conditioner will weigh down your hair, making it look less voluminous, flat, limp, and lifeless. Make sure to buy a light conditioner for your thin hair and apply it sparingly. Put it on only from the middle of each strand to the edges while avoiding the roots.

Use Too Many Products

Applying too many products (even volumizing products) to your hair will result in product buildup, which can weigh your hair down. As such, it will create a lack of volume and density, making it difficult to style your hair.

Grow Your Hair Long

If your hair is on the thin side, it’s not a good idea to grow it very long. Waist-length thin hair looks worse as the extra length accentuates the lack of volume and density. As such, your hair will look limp. So, if your hair is extra-long, consider reducing the length for added structure and volume.

But if you want to sport long hair anyway, you may want to try hair extensions. You're sure to be amazed at the transformation of hair extensions — before and after thin hair. Human hair extensions look fully natural and blend seamlessly with your own hair. They add length, volume, thickness, and density to your hair, allowing you to flaunt many different styles.

Wear a Layered Hairstyle

Since layered hairstyles look gorgeous, you may be tempted to try them on your thin hair. But remember that layers look great on voluminous hair. And since your hair is on the thin side, it lacks the volume required for the layers to look their best. When you pull thin hair into a layered style, your hair will become limp and flat.
